Car diagnostics – what is it?

The car is a technical means of increased danger. To minimize the risk of breakdowns or accidents, it is necessary to conduct regular inspections, constantly monitor the work.

At first it is enough to carry out superficial scheduled maintenance, but in due course full diagnostics of a car will be required. It is necessary before buying an old car, because a superficial pre-sale inspection is unlikely to reveal all the shortcomings of the work.

Car diagnostics: what it includes

Self-diagnosis can be complete, and may involve checking only one node. Complete diagnostics includes an inspection of the following main parts of the machine:

  • Electrical equipment;
  • exhaust system;
  • brake system;
  • running gear;
  • ignition system, engine;
  • Automatic transmission (on vehicles on which it is installed).

Each new car is equipped with an on-board computer that detects a malfunction. Many drivers rely on this data and drive cars in full confidence that the equipment is in order. But the meaning of this function of the on-board computer is to facilitate the work of the service center wizard. Only he with the help of a special electronic system can read all the information about the problem and the general condition of the car.

In the countries of Europe and America electrodiagnostics – the usual phenomenon, and the driver is not engaged in it. His task is to deliver the car to the service station in time, and not to eliminate the detected faults.

Computer diagnostics of the car

A modern car requires computer diagnostics. What is computer machine testing? The on-board diagnostic system includes:

  • sensors for collecting information about the condition of the car;
  • blocks for processing this data;
  • blocks of process control devices.

All information about the technical condition of the car is in the control unit, but it is not available to the driver. It can be considered only a special scanner that displays information on its display. For convenience, it is served encrypted, it can only be read by a specialist. The price of such a device and software for it is quite high, so it is bought only by service stations.

Engine diagnostics

Among other types of computer checking of a condition of the car the central diagnostics of the engine occupies the central place. Frequent overheating of the unit, reduction of its power, unnatural sounds during work, increase in fuel consumption, a smell of gasoline in salon speaks about its necessity. These nuances indicate a faulty injector when the order of fuel injection into the engine is violated. Such problems have a negative effect on the engine, other units and components of the car. Therefore, the first thing to do, finding the above – to examine the engine. The process involves:

  • inspection of liners;
  • checking the condition of the rings;
  • diagnostics of efficiency, condition of nozzles;
  • inspection of spark plugs;
  • oil check;
  • check of fuel filters, fuel pump;
  • determination of oil pump pressure;
  • air filter inspection;
  • check of compression in the block of cylinders;
  • assessment of the general condition, wear of the engine.

If all these parameters have a positive conclusion of the service station specialist, then the motor is in order. It happens that the technical inspection gives the conclusion of the work of these nodes within the norm, but close to the limit values. Then the car service specialist will recommend to carry out a number of preventive works not to allow exceeding of these limits.

For example, the compression ratio in the engine cylinders may be within normal limits, but each of them shows different numbers. Normally, the pressure inside all cylinders should be the same. If it is different, it indicates a hidden problem inside the engine. This can be a sinking or wear of the piston rings, burrs on the cylinder, burnout of the exhaust valve and more. If they are not removed, the motor can fail at any moment. But only a specialist will help to determine the exact cause.
