Depending on the car model, the belt timing mechanism is enough for 60,000 – 120,000 km. The largest working resource is, of course, metal chains. Sooner or later, any car begins to need to replace the timing mechanism.
It should be noted at once that this work has a high level of complexity. For this reason, even the most experienced drivers do not always take it in a home garage. In all 100% it is better that replacement of a belt of the gas-distributing mechanism in Kiev or other city of the country was carried out by competent experts of the service center.
The main difficulties when replacing the belt are:
- acute shortage of free space;
- the need to dismantle the crankshaft pulley;
- high requirements for the accuracy of setting the timing mechanism.
The timing mechanism is located in a hard to reach place. Unscrewing / tightening the fasteners in confined spaces is sometimes a daunting task.
Professional timing belt replacement
Note that the vast majority of vehicles are equipped with a power steering. As a rule, the power steering pulley is placed exactly in the center of the casing of the timing mechanism. In cars without COD it is a little easier to change a belt as the pulley of COD does not occupy already scarce free space.
Replacement of a timing belt and a tension roller are carried out in the following order:
- the upper part of the casing is dismantled;
- the pulley of the COD with a belt is removed (if any);
- the fastening of the generator weakens;
- the generator belt (auxiliary units) is removed;
- the main timing pulleys are set in the position of the top dead center (TDC);
- from the front right wheel the protective wing is removed;
- the crankshaft pulley is dismantled;
- the lower part of the timing casing is removed;
- unscrewed rollers (tension + bypass);
- the timing belt / chain is removed.
After all these manipulations it is necessary to loosen carefully a pump tensioner. Next, new rollers are installed and the condition of the main timing pulleys is additionally monitored (they must face each other’s risks). The camshaft pulley must face the carburetor (risk at risk). Only after all this you can install a new belt. In the course of this work it is necessary to give a belt a correct stretch. Again, only a highly qualified master is able to cope with this procedure.
After the timing belt and rollers have been replaced, the specialists of our service center check manually how the timing mechanism will work. For this purpose it is enough to make 1-2 full turns of a belt / chain transfer. It is best to rotate by mounting the camshaft pulley. Do not forget to control the position of the control lines.
Particular attention should be paid to the direction of rotation when installing a new belt. There is a pointer on any belt. He must look in a clockwise direction.
This list of works is not complete. We do not describe the procedure for tensioning the belt with a pump tensioner. This is a rather delicate work. Only highly qualified masters will be able to cope with it.
It should be repeated that all the above works are carried out in conditions of acute shortage of free space. A repairman with a stuffed hand takes 2-3 hours to perform these technological operations. But we often have to face the situation that “home specialists” begin to change the timing belt on their own and after 2-3 days of pain surrender, driving a tow truck to the workshop. As you know, the price of replacing the timing belt in this case increases, because it takes into account the time, effort and cost of calling a tow truck.
