Today, the most popular engines for automobiles are four-stroke automobile engines, which run on the Otto cycle (in honor of the German inventor, who in 1876 was the first to create a four-stroke internal combustion engine).
Any car internal combustion engine is designed to make the car move. The principle of operation of such an engine is to convert the energy released during the combustion of fuel into a certain driving force, ie the conversion of thermal energy into kinetic energy. How exactly this process takes place depends on the design of the engine, and they can be different, as can the types of car engines.

In general, there are two types of car engines: reciprocating, in which the entire work process takes place in cylinders, and non-piston, such as gas turbines. Reciprocating engines are installed on the vast majority of modern cars, and we will talk about them later.

Just as the human body needs food, so does the car need fuel. You may be confused when approaching the gas station, as there will be several types of gasoline and diesel fuel to choose from. What kind of fuel to refuel the car is specified in the technical characteristics of its engine.

There are two types of engines – gasoline and diesel. In the first, the ignition of the fuel occurs from an electric spark and is called forced, in the second – from the compression of the fuel-air mixture, as a result of which it is very hot and explodes.

Car engines have a rather complex structure. They consist of various mechanisms and systems: crank mechanism, gas distribution mechanism, cooling system, lubrication system, power supply system, and in gasoline engines also ignition systems.

In a car engine, fuel combustion takes place in a cylinder. The valves supply fuel (in gasoline engines) or air (in diesels, and fuel is injected through the injector), the piston begins to move up and compresses it. Then there is a combustion of fuel, thus in the cylinder very high pressure which pushes the piston down is created. With the help of the connecting rod, the reciprocating motion of the piston is converted into a rotational motion of the engine crankshaft, which is then transmitted through the transmission to the wheels of the car.

According to the peculiarities of the structure, other types of car engines can be distinguished. Engines for cars can be 3rd, 4th, 6th and even 8th cylinder. According to the layout of the cylinders in a row, V-shaped (when the cylinders are at a certain angle to each other) and opposite (the angle between the cylinders is 180 degrees). Gasoline engines are carburetor and injector, the latter are more economical and less polluting.
