The main components of the chassis of the car are the bearing base, suspension, axle (bridge) and wheels.
The load-bearing base of a car is a load-bearing body or frame. Also, the load-bearing base can be frame elements connected to the profile elements of the floor panel. The design thus obtained is a separate unit of the car. The engine, transmission and other mechanisms and units are attached to the supporting base (body or frame). On a frame the body (cabin) is established also.
The car’s suspension provides a flexible connection between the frame or the supporting body and the axles (axles) of the car. The suspension dampens body vibrations caused by the movement of the car, softens and absorbs the impact of the wheels from the unevenness of the road, thereby providing greater comfort to the driver and passengers, safety of cargo and operational safety of the car.
The main requirements for the suspension are as follows:
- The elastic characteristic of a suspension bracket has to provide high smoothness of the course and absence of blows, to counteract a roll at turn, “beaks” at braking and dispersal of the car;
- The kinematic scheme should create conditions for the possible minimum change of a track and angles of installation of wheels, conformity of kinematics of wheels to a kinematics of a steering drive excluding fluctuations of the operated wheels, around an axis of turn;
- The optimal amount of damping of body and wheel vibrations;
- Reliable transfer from wheels of a body or a frame of longitudinal and cross forces and the moments;
- A small mass of suspension elements and especially unsprung parts;
- Sufficient strength and durability of the suspension parts and especially the elastic elements, which are among the most loaded parts of the suspension.
For a long time, cars used a suspension in the form of leaf springs. Springs are sheet, torsion, screw, as well as hydraulic and pneumatic. With the development of the automotive industry, twisted springs were also used. There are springs of bending, torsion, tension (compression); there are cylindrical, conical, disc, ring, plate, etc. Shock absorbers are introduced into the suspension system to quickly dampen vibrations. The shock absorber uses springs, torsions, rubber elements, as well as liquids and gases. (Usually hydraulic, lever and telescopic), and to reduce roll on turns – anti-roll bars, which are attached to the beam by means of stabilizer bars. Independent suspension has become widespread. Independent car wheel suspension is a system in which each wheel is suspended from the frame or base of the body independently of each other, so that changing the position of one of them does not cause the movement of the other.
