Steering of the car – the scheme, the device of work, malfunctions
One of the most important components of the car is the steering – it is designed to ensure the movement of vehicles in a given direction. Most cars change the trajectory of their movement by turning the front wheels, the so-called kinematic type of rotation. You can also change the direction of movement of the car by braking certain wheels. This method is taken as a basis in the system of exchange rate stability.
The steering system of most modern cars consists of a steering wheel, a steering column, a drive and a steering mechanism.
The driver applies the force required to change the trajectory of the car, is perceived by the steering wheel and through the steering column is transmitted to the steering mechanism. In addition, the steering wheel also performs an informative function. The force of the effort required to drive, the presence of vibrations in the steering wheel makes the driver understand the nature of traffic and road conditions. The standard diameter of the steering wheel for a car is in the range from 380 to 425 mm, and for trucks this range is 440-550 mm. In sports cars, the steering wheel is slightly smaller in diameter than the minimum standard for passenger cars.
Some cars do not replace the steering wheel at all to the “taste” of the driver.
General structure of the steering.
The steering of modern cars with swivel wheels includes the following elements:
- steering wheel with steering shaft (steering column);
- steering mechanism;
- steering drive (may contain an amplifier and (or) shock absorbers).
The steering wheel is located in the driver’s cab and is located at an angle to the vertical, which provides the most convenient coverage of its rim by the driver’s hands. The larger the diameter of the steering wheel, the other things being equal, less force on the steering wheel rim, but this reduces the possibility of rapid rotation of the steering wheel when performing sharp maneuvers.
