Car brake system – General information

The car has several brake systems.

The service brake system of the car serves for reduction of speed of the moving car with necessary efficiency up to its full stop. It is actuated by the force of the driver’s foot applied to the pedal, and its effectiveness is assessed by the magnitude of the braking distance and the maximum deceleration of the car.

The parking brake system is used to keep the stopped car stationary relative to the road, in particular on the ascent or descent with a slope of 160 fully loaded car.

It is actuated from the lever (handle) by the driver’s hand.

The spare system is designed to stop the car in case of complete or partial failure of the service brake system. In the absence of an autonomous spare brake system on the car, its functions can be performed by a serviceable part of the service brake system (for example, the drive circuit of the front or rear wheel brake mechanisms) or the parking brake system.

The auxiliary braking system (brake-retarder) is used to regulate the speed of the car, unloading the service brake system in conditions of frequent braking – on long descents, in cities and others. It is mandatory for buses with a gross weight of more than 5 tons and trucks with a gross weight of more than 12 tons. This system uses hydraulic and electric brakes, as well as often the car’s engine.

These systems include one or more brakes, a brake actuator and sometimes an amplifier.

The car’s brake mechanisms are designed to create artificial resistance to the rotation of the car’s wheels or transmission shafts. The braking mechanisms of the service brake system will convert the kinetic energy of a moving car into heat.

The brake actuator ensures the transmission of force from the controls to the brake mechanisms and their control.
